Tigers - these beautiful creatures are under threat. There are currently fewer than 3,500 tigers left in the wild. The World Wildlife Fund is using this year - The Year of the Tiger - to promote the plight of tigers in the wild. They face constant threats from poaching, illegal trade in tiger parts, and loss of habitat.
The goal of WWF is to more than double the wild tiger population by the next Year of the Tiger in 2022.
Money raised by WWF will be used to:
- establish and manage effective tiger conservation areas
- reduce the poaching of tigers and their prey
- eliminate the trade in tiger parts and products
- create incentives that will encourage local communities and others to support tiger conservation
- build capacity for tiger conservation.
